The world is now experiencing a proliferation of digitized data whose volume, variety and velocity continue to reach unprecedented levels. Capturing and analyzing data have tremendously influenced how decisions are made and how resources are allocated in various fields, as the accuracy of data processing can affect the results variably.

 

Not content with mere accumulation of colossal amount of data in multiple data stores and abundant formats, Decision Analytics enables us to examine, translate and classify the data, uncover hidden patterns and unknown correlations, and, most importantly, pinpoint precisely the most critical areas and the implications suggested by the data. Useful information can then be extracted and used as a strategic part of critical decision-making or resource allocation for the best course of action at minimal risk.

 

Decision Analytics involves extensive analysis of data, which may be structured or unstructured, using different techniques and tools including but not limited to statistical analysis, data mining and data visualization, computer programming, data structuring, mathematical and statistical modelling and implementation of database systems.

 

With 'Big Data' being one of the most popular topics of conversation in town, the Bachelor of Statistics (Decision Analytics) (Programme Code: 6779) will provide a comprehensive study for students to equip themselves with the necessary expertise in leveraging and managing big data in real time and to acquire a competitive advantage in becoming vital assets of any organisations which need to make decisions.

 

Comprised of a wide range of Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics courses to give a well-balanced curriculum in terms of interdisciplinarity and comprehensiveness, the programme is ideal for students whose interest in statistics, mathematics and computer science crosses over disciplinary divides and combines high-level analytical skills in decision-making and problem-solving. It is also an ideal second major for those pursuing degrees in science, social sciences, information systems, business and quantitative finance.

Accreditation

 

 

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been awarded the status of an Accredited University by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) since December 2023. The RSS accreditation provides reassurance that the teaching, learning and assessment within the accredited programme is of high quality and meets the needs of students and employers.

 

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Statistics (BStat) degree programme at HKU and application to RSS via the standard route, graduates are qualified to become a Graduate Statistician (GradStat) designated by RSS.

In addition, the RSS has awarded individual HKU courses with the RSS Quality Mark, a recognition that these courses teach good statistical literacy. Students who have passed these courses are deemed to have met the academic requirements of the RSS Data Analyst award.

Internship Programmes

There is no better training than obtaining solid hands-on experience in the real workplace. Our Internship Programme serves precisely this purpose. As an intern, the student will gain insight into the challenging world and daily activities of a statistician while strengthening his/her technical, analytical and communication skills.

The collaboration with the Census and Statistics Department, HKSARG offers selected students a chance to participate in the Professional Attachment Programme, where students will be supervised by professionals to engage in various statistical researches and duties in a governmental setting.

BStat students are eligible to use the Department’s Internship / Job Online-application System, where related internships and other job openings from prestigious firms, including graduate positions, will be posted.

To deepen students’ understanding of the industries in relation to their fields, the School has in place the Professional Development (SAAS-PD) to provide students with opportunities to participate in career-related activities and internships, and help them better seize career opportunities readily. Besides one-to-one career consultation, the SAAS-PD will organise other career-related activities to deepen students’ understanding of the industries.
