2019 Munich Re Cup Actuarial Mathematics Competition

Congratulations to our Actuarial Science students Mr Marco Lam and Miss Linhong Qiu, who were awarded for excellent standing at the 2019 Munich Re Cup Actuarial Mathematics Competition! Marco came in second overall, whilst Marco and Linhong were champions for Hong Kong and Chengdu regions respectively.

2019 Munich Re Cup Actuarial Mathematics Competition

Two teams formed by our Actuarial Science students have won the Ernst & Young NextWave Data Science Challenge (Hong Kong region) including monetary prize and internship opportunity!
 
With over 350 students registering for the competition, 14 top performers from different Hong Kong universities have been invited to present their work in terms of methodology, findings, and thoughts in the final held on 30 May 2019.

HKU was ranked No.2 worldwide and No.1 in Asia based on research contributions from the top 4 actuarial journals amongst non-business schools over a 25-year period from 1994 to 2019.

HKU was ranked No.2 worldwide and No.1 in Asia based on research contributions from the top 4 actuarial journals (Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, North American Actuarial Journal, ASTIN Bulletin, and Scandinavian Actuarial Journal) amongst non-business schools over a 25-year period from 1994 to 2019. It was 1994 when the BSc in Actuarial Science programme was launched. HKU was even ranked No. 1 in 2006 and 2013 worldwide in this global study conducted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Designed by Dr Philip Yu of HKU Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, the powerful portfolio optimization software “PORTimizer®” and MPF mobile app “MPF Optimal Allocation (MPF OpAl)” was demonstrated at the launch of the “HKU x Cyberport FinTech Nucleus” recently. Users can view the monthly market price information of each MPF fund, record their own portfolios, track the changes of the portfolios, perform optimization based on their preferences on equity contribution based on the newly developed GPQ method, and project the future performance of the optimized portfolios.

Congratulations to our HKU students who teamed up and won the second runner-up prize of HKD10,000 in a FinTech Hackathon, a competition organised by Hang Seng Bank on May 27-28, 2017.

Congratulations to our HKU students, Mr. Jia You (PhD candidate in Statistics), Mr. Renjie Lu (PhD candidate in Statistics), Mr. Brian Chan (MPhil. candidate in Physics who is planning to study PhD in Statistics) and Mr. Haofeng Li (PhD in Computer Science), who teamed up and won the second runner-up prize of HKD10,000 in a FinTech Hackathon, a competition organised by Hang Seng Bank on May 27-28, 2017. Amongst them there were over 110 contestants from eight different tertiary institutions.
 
Leveraging “Haccelerator” platform co-organised by Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Cyberport, the Hang Seng Bank FinTech Hackathon this year was about applications of machine learning in banking.

Dr. Patrick Sun-Cheong Poon

Further to the establishment of the endowed Patrick S C Poon Professorship in Statistics and Actuarial Science, Dr. Patrick Sun-Cheong Poon has made recurrent donation to continue the Patrick Poon Lecture Series in Actuarial Science, which was established in 2004.
 
The Department is also deeply grateful to Dr. Poon for his great generosity in making donation to continue the Dr Patrick S C Poon Scholarship in Actuarial Science, which awards up to ten Actuarial Science freshmen. In 2012, Dr. Poon pledged another donation to the University of Hong Kong for the establishment of Dr Patrick S C Poon Scholarship in Statistics, which awards up to four outstanding undergraduates who pursue Decision Analytics, Risk Management or Statistics studies. A team of Actuarial Science students (Li Mingze, Wang Mengyu, Wang Rong, Wang Ziyong, and Zhuo Weiming) was placed second in the Student Case Study Challenge (Challenge) of Society of Actuaries (SOA). As a new initiative of SOA, the Challenge attracted more than 40 teams from different universities worldwide to apply their actuarial skills on a real world problem on health disruptors.

A team of Actuarial Science students (Li Mingze, Wang Mengyu, Wang Rong, Wang Ziyong, and Zhuo Weiming) was placed second in the Student Case Study Challenge (Challenge) of Society of Actuaries (SOA).

Seven students majoring in Actuarial Science of our Department had outstanding performance in the 2016 Munich Re Cup” National College Student Actuarial Mathematics Competition, which was successfully held on 22 May 2016. The competition aimed at developing students’ risk management skills so they may put theory into practice.
 
This year, more than 100 universities from mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan sent in participants. With over 600 participants in the competition, our University is one of the universities with the most students being placed in the top 100. Here are some of the top results of our students:

Professor Tony W.K. Fung on being elected President-Elect (2015-17) of the IASC.

Congratulations to Professor Tony W.K. Fung, Chair of Statistics of the Department, on being elected President-Elect (2015-2017) of the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC). Professor Fung is the first Chinese being elected President-Elect of IASC since its foundation in 1977. He also served as Vice President of IASC in 2007-2009, and Chairman of the Asian Regional Section (ARS) of IASC in 2005-2008.
 
IASC is the largest statistical association in statistical computing in the world. The Association publishes its official journal Computational Statistics and Data Analysis and organises its own Conferences (IASC World Conferences, COMPSTAT in Europe, ARS Conferences on Statistical Computing in Asia) and Summer Schools.

Professor Yang on being elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries

Congratulations to Professor Hailiang Yang on being elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA)!
 
Professor Yang is one of the six outstanding individuals who have been elected as Honorary Fellows 2014 by Fellows and Associates of the IFoA, in recognition of his distinct achievements in actuarial science as well as significant service to the actuarial profession throughout the years.
 
Professor Yang is the first actuarial staff in the Department and the second person in the University who has been elected as an Honorary Fellow of the IFoA, subsequent to Professor Howell Tong, Distinguished Visiting Professor in Statistics, former Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Founding Dean of the Graduate School of the University.
 
The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries is one of a few international professional bodies with a long history in providing accreditations in actuarial science and worldwide recognised qualifications for actuaries.

Centre of Actuarial Excellence (CAE) Research Grant

Good News! The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science has recently been awarded the CAE Research Grant by the Society of Actuaries (US). Totalling USD281,490, the CAE Research Grant will be used to conduct a 3-year project on the actuarial study of dependent risks.
 
Being one of the only two universities in Asia that have been designated as a Centre of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries (US) amongst 24 other universities in the world, HKU is the first and the only one in Asia being awarded the CAE Research Grant to date. Warmest congratulations to Professor SAW Swee-Hock on receiving the Honorary University Fellowships (HUF) 2013 in recognition of his tremendous contributions to the University and the community.
 
As the
Department’s founding Chair from 1969-1971, Professor Saw has been its long time friend and patron. Professor Saw helped establish the Saw Gold Medal in Statistics in 1971, the Saw Swee Hock Statistics Scholarship in 2005, and the Saw Swee Hock Visiting Professorship in Statistics in 2008. The Saw Gold Medal still continues after more than 40 years. Professor Saw has always endeavoured to promote the development of Statistics not only at this University but also in his native country Singapore and worldwide.

HKU is ranked No. 1 in Asia and No. 10 worldwide in a publication of the official journal of the Society of Actuaries, North American Actuarial Journal.

HKU is ranked No. 1 in Asia and No. 10 worldwide according to a scientific paper entitled "A Digital Picture of the Actuarial Research Community" by Christian Genest & Alberto Carabarín-Aguirre published in the North American Actuarial Journal (2013, vol. 17:1, pages 3-12), in terms of publication pages in the actuarial journals of their study over a 30-year period from 1982 to 2011.

Dr Guosheng Yin who has been named a fellow of the ASA.

Congratulations to Dr Guosheng Yin who has been named a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation's preeminent professional statistical society.
 
Dr Yin was honored for outstanding methodological and collaborative research contributions to clinical trial design, survival analysis and Bayesian statistical methods; for exemplary service to the profession and the ASA.

 
The ASA is the world’s largest community of statisticians and the second-oldest continuously operating professional society in US.
 
The Department now has 3 ASA fellows.
