HKU is ranked No.1 in Hong Kong and No.22 worldwide in the QS World University Rankings 2021.
In the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2019, HKU Statistics ranks No.2 in Hong Kong, No.5 in Asia and No.34 worldwide overall.
According to U.S. News & World Report 2014, HKU Mathematics and Statistics rank the 9th in the "Best Global Universities Rankings for Mathematics".
HKU was ranked No.2 worldwide and No.1 in Asia based on research contributions from the top 4 actuarial journals (Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, North American Actuarial Journal, ASTIN Bulletin, and Scandinavian Actuarial Journal) amongst non-business schools over a 25-year period from 1994 to 2019. HKU was even ranked No. 1 in 2006 and 2013 worldwide in this global study conducted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For details see here.
The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is part of the University Grants Committee's commitment to assessing the performance of the UGC-funded universities. Out of seven comparable units of assessment for Mathematics and Statistics, we rank No.1 in terms of the percentage judged to meet the standard of 4-star, the highest starred level for overall quality profile of research, in RAE 2020.
Established in 1967, the Department has currently 19 professoriate staff and over 80 Ph.D. and M.Phil. students.

Fellowships and Scholarships Available
The following fellowships/scholarships are available for applicants with outstanding academic performance, research ability or potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities:
HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship (HKU-PS): up to around HK$433,300 in the first year, and up to around HK$413,300 in each of the subsequent years during the normative study period, subject to satisfactory study progress
Hong Kong PhD Fellowships (HKPF)*: offered by the Research Grants Council for HK$337,200 per year and a conference and research related travel allowance of HK$14,000 per year for a period up to three years. (https://cerg1.ugc.edu.hk/hkpfs/index.html for details)
Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS): offered by HKU for HK$225,120 per year, or HK$231,240 per year for PhD students whose probationary candidature has been confirmed (in 2020)

September 1- December 1, 2024: Main Round application
*Applicants applying for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship (HKPF) have to submit BOTH an initial application to the Research Grants Council (RGC) by December 1, 2024 (HKT 12:00 or GMT +8 hours) and then a full application to HKU by abovementioned main round application deadline.

All applicants are encouraged to apply for HKPF.
For the 2025/26 exervise, all HKPF holders will be awarded the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship (HKU-PS)^. Separate application for HKU-PS is not required.
^ Selected candidates who are not awarded HKPF but considered to be of high calibre by the University may also receive HKU-PS.
If an applicant is nominated for HKPF application, a professoriate staff will contact and work together with the applicant to prepare necessary documents for the formal HKPF application. In the case of unsuccessful HKPF application, the nominated HKPF applicants will be automatically considered for UPF; and if unsuccessful application in the subsequent UPF application, the candidates will be automatically allocated PGS.
