Statistics Project / Capstone Experience Courses (2020-21)

To: Decision Analytics/ Risk Management/ Statistics Major Students (2020-21)

If you have already been allocated a project / capstone course in the first semester, please ignore this email.

Students are invited to submit applications HERE for the following capstone courses for 2020-21 (2nd semester): (Note: The earliest that a student can take the following capstone courses is their year 3 study.)

1. STAT3799 Directed studies in statistics (6 credits)

  • Format: Individual project/directed studies
  • In the registration form, students can submit up to 10 choices of project titles in descending preference. As all applications will undergo selection by supervisors, please do not assume that you will be automatically assigned a place if you submit only 1 choice.
  • But please note that this is the third call of application and therefore most of the projects are already taken up. There is a high possibility that we cannot cater for your preference.
  • For the project titles of STAT3799, please visit:
    https://saasresearch.hku.hk/share/courses/2020-21/STAT3799_Project_Titles_2020-21.pdf.

2. STAT4710 Capstone experience for statistics undergraduates (6 credits) (This course is mutually exclusive to all other capstone courses in the majors.)

  • Format: Group project
  • Students do not need to indicate preference for topics/supervisors, as grouping will be done randomly. The project title/topic will be discussed and fixed during the first meeting with supervisors.

 Before applying for the course:

  • Students should read the FAQ carefully: https://saasweb.hku.hk/courses/stat-project/faq.php
  • In particular, students are strongly advised to consult the corresponding project supervisor(s) before submitting choices of project titles in the registration form. If a supervisor agrees to take you as project student, please remember to include such information under the box “Remarks for office’s attention” in the registration form.

 When applying for the course:

  • Students can apply for more than one course. The Department will make the selection for each course in the above order. If a student applies for more than one course, the Department will consider if the student is of enough academic merit for course #1 first, if not, then course #2, and so on.
  • The deadline for application is Monday, 18 January 2021. Late applications will not be accepted.

 After applying for the course:

  • Announcement of the application results will be made via HKU email by Friday, 22 January 2021.

Upon successful application for the course:

  • No changes (e.g. semester, choices of supervisors/groups, etc.) will be entertained.
  • Please enroll yourself in the corresponding course for the 2nd semester on SIS during the add/drop period in January. If you decide not to enroll the approved project, please inform the department at ug_enquiry@saas.hku.hk ASAP.
  • Students will not be allowed to drop the course after the corresponding add/drop period.
