"Looking back, I’m always happy with my decision to study Risk Management for my Bachelor degree at HKU. It is definitely challenging to come through a field where statistics, finance, and data science comes together. But it was all worth it as my learning journey has shaped me to be a great analytical thinker and reliable problem solver.
The syllabus and course structure itself is comprehensive with great flexibility on choosing statistical elective courses. This allows me to explore different focus areas and tools of Risk Management, which is crucial for my career decision after I graduate. Some courses I have taken previously were investment risk, derivatives and statistical machine learning. Although the topics sound hefty, but all these courses combined gives a balanced level between taught theories, trained technical skills, and understanding real-life cases.
The department is also always resourceful towards its students especially when it comes to the concern of their career development. From a number of CV & interview workshops, essential IT skills crash course, and even maintaining relationships with different employers and line them for openings to a job portal that is exclusively accessible only for their students.
Overall, HKU gives out a great facilitation on both learning experience and career development, either for further studies or future professional work. All of these hard skills, soft skills, and opportunities that I have gained out of the programme is what brings to and keeps me going on my current working position now as a Management Trainee at one of the local giants."
