Alejandro COBO PIEKENBROCK (Full-time)

Alejandro Cobo Piekenbrock is a full-time Master student in Statistics at the University of Hong Kong. Prior to this, he engaged in several internship experiences of different nature. He worked as a Research Intern on Banking and Financial Supervision at the Deutsche Bundesbank (Central Bank of Germany) in Frankfurt. He was also appointed as an Associate Consultant Intern at the in-house consultancy of UniCredit in Munich (Germany). He acquired further working experience in Risk Management at Gas Natural in Madrid (Spain) and in Product Management at Miele in Guetersloh (Germany).
Alejandro graduated from the University of Munich (LMU Munich) in Economics and studied one semester at the Maastricht University (the Netherlands). Due to his strong performance, Alejandro was appointed as a Teaching Assistant in Econometrics and Stata and also in Mathematics by the University of Munich before graduation. Both of his analytical and creative mind were highly valued when working as a Research Assistant of one of the Professors at the Faculty of Economics.
Alejandro speaks English, German, Spanish, French and Italian. He has basic knowledge of Mandarin and is currently picking up some words in Cantonese. He has experience in using different programming languages such as Python, R, SAS and Stata.
Apart from his quantitative abilities, Alejandro possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills. He enjoys debating, speaking in public and giving presentations. He also likes motivating and supporting other people in all kind of aspects of their lives.
Outside classroom, Alejandro spends his free time practicing sports like Surfing and Tennis, and travelling with his family and friends.
CHAN Shun Hin (Full-time)

With a keen interest in solving problems through data analyses, Lupe always wants to work in the field of actuarial and statistics. To equip himself with various techniques and skills for future career development, he enrolled in the Master of Statistics program which comprises such courses as statistics, data science, programming and risk management etc. He received a BSc degree in Mathematics (major in Applied Mathematics and minor in Actuarial Mathematics) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2015 before his took up his last job as a data analyst. He has passed 4 examinations of P, FM, C and MFE offered by the Society of Actuaries and also completed 2 examinations offered by the Hong Kong Statistical Society with another 2 being exempted.
He keeps enhancing himself not only through the Master of Statistics program and various professional examinations, but also by reading books and updating himself with the latest information in the area where he wants to develop. A conscientious and responsible person who is always looking for opportunities to apply his knowledge and to contribute at work place.
CHAN Wing Chun (Full-time)

Statistics ignites his passion to be an analyst. With strong statistical knowledge, Wing-chun would like to be the one who can turn data from a sea of Big Data into useful information for decision making.
He chose to study the Master of Statistics program in the University of Hong Kong in order to equip himself with both theoretical and practical aspects of statistics.
By completing courses in time series modeling, data mining, sample survey and multivariate data analysis, Wing-chun has acquired substantial knowledge and hands-on experience in collecting, modelling and analysing data.
He was also well-versed in such statistical software language as SAS, SAS, EM, and R etc. which he could draw on when he comes to handle projects/work that are assigned to him at work place requiring such expertise.
Being a part-time teaching assistant in the University of Hong Kong, he has developed strong communication and critical thinking skills not to mention of the language fluency in English.
CHANG Chi Ming Jimmy (Part-time)

Jimmy is on a Master of Statistics program in the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He works in a risk management company.
At work place, Jimmy specialises in research work and quality assurance to ensure that the company standard and client's need are met. Through his daily work, he has gained solid analytical skill and developed a strong sense of responsibility. He is also detail-minded.
He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Finance from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2013. While studying in the University, he found that many economic theories were backed up with data or statistical results. He also realised that decision making required comprehensive analysis, balancing risks and benefits. Inspired by it, he has developed a great interest in this field of knowledge and decided to pursue the study of statistics. He is passionate about data analysis and has experience in handling big data through his final year project about the relationship between education and income of Hong Kong citizens.
In his current study in HKU, Jimmy focuses on statistical analysis and statistical theories as both of these apply well in the area of risk management. One of his hobbies is playing pokers, which is definitely a fun way to practise statistics.
CHEUNG Pok Ham (Part-time)

Raymond Cheung has worked in various analyst positions since graduation with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Finance from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
As a Business Analyst in Hutchison Travel Limited, Raymond has provided not only actionable insight on sales and product performance based on accurate data analysis, but also maximized the SEM traffic and conversion with limited budget. He also analyzed web usage and customer behavior through web analytics. He believes optimizing through data analysis is the key in this era of Big Data. Currently, he is studying the Master of Statistics program in the University of Hong Kong. He is convinced that through it, he will attain an in-depth understanding of statistics and an advanced knowledge of statistical software to enhance his ability further in data analysis and decision making.
Moreover, Raymond Cheung is well versed in different computer programming such as C++, JavaScript, SQL and VBA etc. He has also profound knowledge in business intelligence tools (Power BI, Qlik, Tableau) which are useful for data modelling and visualization. He is passionate about contributing to the company with his statistical skill sets.
JIANG Zeting (Full-time)

With a major in Statistics in undergraduate studies at Jinan University, ranked top 10 in the nation, Zeting has acquired both substantive statistics knowledge and knowledge of finance and economics.
Zeting has a solid theoretical foundation in mathematical statistics and probability theory. Moreover, she has acquired such technical skills as computer programming and the application of some of the new software systems in statistic, like R, SAS (Programming Language), SPSS and STATA.
She is passionate about data analysis and tries every possibility to turn data into business useful information for quality decision making with her strong analytical abilities.
JIN Yixiu (Full-time)

Yixiu received her Bachelor of Science degree in 2016 at Hong Kong Baptist University with major in Statistics and Operations Research and minor in Finance. She has developed a solid statistical analysis foundation and gained proficiency with several statistical software packages including SAS, R and Matlab, allowing her to engage in more than 5 in-depth statistical researches in various fields independently.
Yixiu has always been strongly passionate about statistics. She was attracted to the fascinating world of financial markets during her studies at university. She has passed two actuarial examinations of Probability and Financial Mathematics. Moreover, she has completed four different kinds of internship in various financial companies as an actuarial and financial adviser intern in insurance company, a quantitative investment intern in securities company and a corporate bank intern in commercial bank. These working experiences not only have refined her academic knowledge and further developed her computer skills like VBA, Bloomberg and Wind, but also helped her apply technical knowledge in real work situations. Besides, through internship, she has developed a strong sense of team and responsibility.
Yixiu is convinced that the Master of Statistics program will enhance her understanding in data analysis methodology and its application in market data and risk control segment. In her spare time, she enjoys painting, cooking and travelling. She is a qualified professional ACAA China Digital Art Designer and has experience in designing website homepage background.
LUI Siu Man (Full-time)

Carrie received her PhD (Information Systems) and BBA (Information Systems) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Upon graduation, she worked as a research academic staff in James Cook University in Australia, where she conducted and managed various research projects funded by James Cook University and Queensland Government in Australia. Carrie is a researcher who enjoys turning data into actionable knowledge to bring values to business and society. Through her research projects, she has gained the skills and experiences to design research studies and analyze data for online surveys, simulations, experiments and secondary data. She is also a Project Management Professional (PMP) certificated by the Project Management Institute. Her research has been published in international conference proceedings and peer-reviewed journals. Carrie has strong programming skills including C++, Java, Visual Basic, SAS, Matlab, R, and SQL.
She is a current student of the University of Hong Kong pursuing a Master's degree of Statistics. Through this programme, she looks forward to sharpening her data mining and quantitative skills. She is passionate about applying her information technology knowledge, research skills, and statistical analysis techniques to solve challenging problems. In her free time, she enjoys reading, photography and badminton.
LYU Jiayin (Full-time)

Jiayin Lyu is a student in the Master of Science in Statistics in the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Before joining HKU, she graduated from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science.
She interned as a data analyst in Shanghai Pudong Development Bank and completed projects related to marketing management with the team. Fluent with using software such as SAS, R, and Design Expert, she also worked as a research assistant in Zhejiang Sci-Tech University and completed a publication as the third author.
Her current study includes risk management and data analysis. She has passed two Society of Actuaries Examinations on Probabilities and Financial Mathematics. Furthermore, she is going to take CFA I Level Exam in June 2017.
She would describe herself as restorative (love to solve problems), positive, and focused. She plans to be a financial analyst or a statistician in the future. She loves what she does and she is convinced that what she learns in HKU will empower her with knowledge and skills that she can contribute at workplace.
MAK Ka Hei (Part-time)

Terence Mak is in his sixth year in PCCW Solutions, where he is in charge of several big and innovative projects, such as e-Locker.
As an Operation Executive in Business Process Outsourcing unit, he oversees the operation and financial performance of the unit. He also plans and evaluates marketing campaigns based on the research and analysis of the findings. Besides, he is a member of the Resources Management Team of the company responsible for human resource planning and utilization analysis. By using SQL, Terence generates various reports for senior management's review and decision making.
Through the Master of Statistics programme, Terence is equipped with statistical techniques and data analytical skills with hands-on experience in using commercial statistical software. His current academic interests include Data Mining, Marketing Analytics and Programming in Data Science. Terence is shifting the focus of his career to accommodate his interest in statistical analysis and data.
Prior to working in PCCW Solutions, Terence received a Bachelor's degree in Risk Management and Finance from the University of Hong Kong in 2011. Outside classroom, Terence likes travelling and exploring new things.
MEI Ruoqi (Full-time)

MEI Ruoqi is in the Master of Statistics Program at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). Prior to joining HKU, Ruoqi studied in mainland China at Nankai University, majoring in Statistics. She interned as a market researcher in Shangcheng Bureau of Statistics in 2014 and as a statistics assistant in China Telling Telecom Co. Ltd in 2015 where she mainly took the responsibilities of establishing models and financial forecasting. The highly fit models and precise analyses made by her not only won high praise from her colleagues and leaders but also brought economic benefits to companies. Ruoqi has always dreamed of working in finance industry. She plans to take the CFA examination and attends many courses and lectures related to finance. Outside classroom, Ruoqi likes swimming and running. She is the girl who loves her life, and appreciates everything she has. Confidence, gratitude as well as intellectual curiosity are the personalities shining on her.

Keen on statistics and actuarial science, PAN Yu hopes to engage in quantitative research all her life and to apply statistical and actuarial knowledge into a wide variety of fields.
She graduated from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics with a Bachelor of Economics degree in Statistics. She had therefore compound education background of Statistics, Actuarial Science, Finance and Economics.
Being a statistician is a sexy job and that's why she furthers her statistical knowledge through the Master program in Statistics at HKU. It is this unforgettable period that is of great importance to her career path. Additionally, she has passed the first two subjects of the Actuarial Examination in Actuarial Mathematics and Financial Mathematics.
Before taking the Master of Statistics program, she served as an intern in Deloitte Consulting, analyzing the strength and weakness of the industry, spotting the potential competence, and making the development strategy for clients. Through this working experience, she has developed industry analyzing ability and critical thinking skills.
In spare time, she enjoys painting and yoga.

Gary Poon is a motivated, responsible and hardworking consultant. He is interested in big data, data analysis, business intelligence and information technology. He has learnt SAS, Qlikview, Tableau, Vertica and Hadoop in his past working experience. Moreover, he has participated at enterprise level information management and data analytic projects as a consultant. The projects he handled included enterprise data warehouse design, Anti-Money Laundering system (AML) transaction monitoring scenario design and platform upgrade as well as analytic insights discovery for strategy in Marketing, Product and Customer. As a consultant, he provides professional consultancy and industrial practices to ensure high quality project deliveries. He has more than 5 years solid experience in project management, data warehouse design, data engineering (ETL), data analysis, MIS report, information management and business intelligence application development. He has also contributed in big-data related product pre-sale activities.

She has always been fascinated by reasons. She can notice a kind of special and clear beauty in data, logic and models.
She is familiar with R and uses it skillfully, such as OLS and nonparametric statistical methods. She has also a strong interest in handling python and getting interesting data from web. Upon graduation of the Master of Statistics, she is convinced that she will gain database skills including Access and SQL etc. She is diligent, calm and holds a belief that what she does comes from bottom of her heart, and will benefit the future.
She thinks that the Master of Statistics programme can guide her to further study and is very helpful for her career development.
WANG Lingyi (Full-time)

Lingyi receives her Bachelor's degree in Statistics from Beijing Normal University (BNU). She believes that statistics has provided a powerful tool for data analysis and interpretation, which is increasingly important as Internet of Things (IoT) takes shape.
She is particularly interested in data mining techniques and statistical modeling. Through studying the Master of Statistics program at the University of Hong Kong, she is convinced that it will further enhance her IT knowledge, which will not only better prepare herself for a career, but also enable her to contribute her best at workplace.
She previously interned at ApplySquare working with data-driven decisions that influence product development. Through the internship, she has a clear understanding of data analytics methodologies and how they should be applied in real business. Wang Qian has critical mind and burning desire to pursue mathematical mysteries. She is also interested in applying mathematical models in financial field. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Science from City University of Hong Kong with major in mathematics and minor in quantitative finance. The sensitive cognition of number and data has driven her to pursuit another aspect of statistics. She thus took a Master of Statistics program in HKU to broaden her future career paths as the programme offers the right mix of risk management and data analysis, the two hot fields in job market.

She is always willing to learn new things. Moreover, with a wide range of curriculum of the Master of Statistics program and qualified professors in HKU, she has equipped herself with a solid foundation of knowledge as well as crucial software skills like Matlab and SAS etc. She is therefore convinced that she is competent in statistical or actuarial-related field, where her dream industry lies on. In order to advance her software skills further, she is currently learning R and Python.

Living in an era of Big Data, Yizhu is always fascinated by the beauty of statistics of how people find valuable information from numbers. With great passion, she chose to continue her study in the University of Hong Kong after graduation with a Bachelor's degree of Science in Statistics and Operation Research from Hong Kong Baptist University.
The Master of Statistics program offers her a great opportunity to have an in-depth understanding of how useful statistics is in different fields. It also encourages practice, teamwork and communication which help a lot in her future career.
With many projects experiences in the curriculum of the Master of Statistics programme, she has gained proficiency in database and statistical software including SAS, R and Matlab. Besides, she has learnt to solve problems independently and developed ability to analyze different situations with proper methods.
She is also interested in finance and psychology. Thus, she has chosen many related topics including financial management, investment management and abnormal psychology etc.
She enjoys meeting people and has good communication skills developed through her internship as a recruiter and engaging in extra-curricular activity as a welfare officer.
Moreover, her internship in Financing Guarantee Company and Insurance Company has provided her with an opportunity to know more about the finance and business field where she heavily involved in the analysis of the company's financing situation. At the same time, she learnt the latest law regulating the insurance industry.
With good communication and software application skills as well as strong numerical analysis ability, Yizhu is always highly motivated and ready for producing quality work.
WONG Tsang Hung (Part-time)

Peter Wong, CFA, FRM, an experienced programmer, working closely with traders and portfolio managers in the quant team, is responsible for building and maintaining databases, developing and back-testing strategies as well as other middle to back office functions such as performance analysis and risk management.
Peter started his career in accounting in 2010. After acquiring programming skills in VBA through self-learning, he has gradually taken additional responsibilities in various areas in hedge fund. He has automated tasks to improve reporting efficiency and accuracy. Besides, he has also created new reporting templates and tools for traders and portfolio managers. As a quant team member, he has also built databases which automatically download daily and intra-day data, developed and back-tested different kinds of mean-reverting and trend-following strategies in R. The programming languages he knows include R, Python 3.x, VBA, MySQL and Matlab. Currently he is learning C++ and Java Script.
Peter has a keen interest in finance. Prior to attending the Master of Statistics program, he completed a Master of Finance degree in Financial Engineering and Risk Management at HKU in 2015 whereas the CFA and FRM programs in 2011 and 2015 respectively. By taking the Master of Statistics program, he would have enhanced further his quantitative and data analysis skills, enabling him to identify and develop new trading strategies with significant risk-adjusted return.
YU Lu (Full-time)

Graduated from the Department of Data Science, Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics, Lu was one of the 1% top students in her major. With her strong interest in statistics and tough personalities, she earned a GPA of 4.5/5.0.
In order to have an even stronger background in statistics, she enrolled in the Master of Statistics programme at the University of Hong Kong taking core courses such as Advanced Statistics Inference, Computational statistics, Finance Data Analysis in order to have an in-depth understanding of statistics, bridging the gap from theory to practice.
Lu also has rich experiences in the application of statistics, especially quantitative modeling and programming. She could handle quantitative jobs by applying different computer languages such as Python, R and SAS to solve difficult problems. During the past 4 years, she has won a number of 1st prizes in a series of competitions playing the role of group leader.
Besides her excellent academic performance and being a top student in the eyes of professors and classmates, she has also effective communication, leadership and collaboration skills developed through the nurturing of the Debate Team of the Department of Data Science for 4 years
To be an analyst performing analysis programmes about global financial markets is her dream job, a job which she has a strong passion to take initiative and learn. She believes that she could determine the future by herself.

As a young lady with ambition and strong learning ability, Jin is keen to challenge herself and explore the unknown world. This has led her climb to the peak of academic study in the Master of Statistics at the University of Hong Kong, one step nearer to her goal of becoming an outstanding marketing analyst in the near future.
To enhance her academic knowledge and software skills, she participated in a number of academic competitions during her undergraduate study in the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. As the team leader, she took charge of the arrangement of time and the division of labor, from which she has developed team work spirit, leadership and communication skills as well as modeling ability. This experience has, more importantly, given her confidence in applying statistics software in solving problems. To this end, she is convinced that she would establish her career in the field of data analysis as a marketing analyst in the future.

Zhou Zihui is studying the Master of Statistics program in Fall 2016 in the University of Hong Kong after graduating from the University of Science and Technology of China with a Bachelor's degree in Statistics. During her undergraduate, she participated in the Undergraduate Research Project in Chinese Academy of Sciences, where she applied her statistical theories to practical data analysis problems. Through this experience, she came to realise how statistical ability could really make a difference to real lives.
She also completed a summer internship in the financial department of China Guangfa Bank, where she had hands-on experience in handling statistical accounting of fund flow and understood the main business of financial department. She is good at using such statistical software as R and SAS etc in solving complex problems requiring analysis. With strong academic background and computer programming skills, she is convinced that she would be a perfect fit for jobs in risk management or data analytics fields.
In her spare time, she enjoys dancing, running and performing volunteer work.
