Winners Announced for HKU Innovative Data Mining Application Awards 2015


The University of Hong Kong's Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and SAS have selected the winners of the Data Mining Application Awards 2015.

A team of three of the department¡¦s Master's students ¡V Jin Zhe, Pan Yuxing and She Shichang ¡V were crowned the winners of the competition for their project designed to apply data mining to NBA talent selection.

First runner up went to Cheung Chi Hin, Cheung Sek Yuen Martin, Kwan Ming Tsun and Lam Wing Yin for a project to use data mining to help customers with wine selection.

Two teams shared the second runner up award. Cheung Kai Chun, Huang Jia Jie and Yip Ka Man studied food photo shooting patterns and posting habits of Hong Kong Instagram users, while Cheung Wing Chung Vinci, Lau Kwok Piu and Lo Sze Nok Johnathan developed a predictive model to support effective bank telemarketing.

The department has been offering a data mining techniques course for the master of statistics program since 2003. As part of the program, students are assigned a group project to make use of data mining skills with the use of SAS tools.

SAS has now sponsored the Data Mining Application Awards for 10 consecutive years.
