Here are the steps to apply for this internship course:
Step 1: To find an internship
To be eligible, you should be undertaking a Statistics or Risk Management-related internship of no less than 160 hours (lunch hour excluded) in at least 20 working days.
Seek the internship yourself or via our online Student Internship Application system.
Step 2: After you have secured an internship
Please bear in mind that the enrolment of this course is NOT conducted via the online course selection system. Interested students should complete the registration form to Mr. K.L. Ng at ngkl@hku.hk with a copy of your internship appointment letter, contract or any other evidence of employment.
Two weeks after you have started your internship, submit the progress report form to Mr. K.L. Ng within the second week of the job start date.
You are advised to apply this course once you get an internship as POST-APPLICATION IS NORMALLY NOT ALLOWED. To facilitate logistics, your early application is very much appreciated.
Since the course is normally designed for those students stated above, other students who would like to enroll in the course should seek special approval from the course coordinator.
Step 3: Completing your internship
To satisfy the course requirements, you need to
- submit a written report to Mr. K.L. Ng. The report should be 1200-1600 words summarizing the work you have done and any reflection regarding your internship experience,
- invite your employer to complete the evaluation form and return it to the department directly by mail / email / fax.
- deliver a 25-minute oral presentation of your internship experience (5-minute Q&A inclusive).
Assessment of this course is on a Pass or Fail basis with 3 criteria: (1) employer's evaluation, (2) written report, (3) oral presentation and attendance in peers' presentation. Please note that fail in fulfilling any of the 3 criteria satisfactorily would lead to a "Fail" grade in the course.
Students having passed this course will be deemed to have satisfied the experiential learning (EL) requirement by the Faculty of Science (applicable to BSc students admitted in 2007 or thereafter) and, at the same time, have your internship experience recognized in your transcript.

For your information
No late course registration
If you are approved to take STAT3988 with an internship across two consecutive semesters, your oral presentation and grading shall be conducted in the semester during which the internship is going to end, instead of the semester during which you apply for the course.
Nevertheless, please be reminded that Employer's Evaluation Form should be sent to Department by the end date of your appointment period despite the scheduled timeline above.
If you have only taken a non-credit bearing EL course / activity (eg. STAT3989, SCNC2005, overseas exchange), you must take an additional 6-credit senior-level statistics course.
If the internship takes place as a full-time position during the first or second semester, students have to apply to the Faculty for leave of absence with the submission of a letter with the copy of contract in advance.
Should you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact the Department.
