"I am currently a Senior Analyst and Portfolio Manager at HSBC Asset Management, where I oversee portfolios and analyze stocks in the Greater China equity market.

The syllabus and course structure itself is comprehensive with great flexibility on choosing statistical elective courses. After graduating from the HKU’s Actuarial Science program in 2010, I realized my true passion lay in banking and finance—a field that operates at the forefront of our rapidly evolving world. Consequently, I pursued an MSc in Economics at the London School of Economics, funded by the British Chevening Scholarship, immediately following my HKU graduation. My career began at Nomura as a sell-side equity analyst specializing in the Hong Kong property sector, followed by a similar role at JP Morgan. After five years on the sell-side, I transitioned to my current firm as a buy-side analyst covering property, technology, robotics and automation sectors, eventually assuming portfolio management responsibilities. I thrive in this role, as it allows me to stay abreast of the latest macroeconomic developments, political shifts, and technological trends while investing on behalf of our clients based on our forward-looking forecasts. I derive immense satisfaction from making accurate judgments and predictions that generate excess returns for our clients.

My undergraduate studies at HKU laid a robust foundation for my career and personal growth. Although I did not pursue a career as an actuary, the program equipped me with advanced quantitative and analytical skills crucial for financial modeling and analysis. The comprehensive curriculum—spanning actuarial mathematics, statistics, quantitative finance, economics, and accounting—proved invaluable during my postgraduate studies and throughout my professional journey in finance and investment. Beyond academics, HKU's holistic education played a pivotal role in my development. The university's diverse offerings, including the HKU Mentorship Program, residential halls, clubs and societies, and career support from the Department and CEDARS, provided ample opportunities to hone my communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. My 17-year mentorship relationship with my HKU mentor has been particularly rewarding, profoundly shaping my perspectives on the world, life, humanity, and career development.

I strongly encourage prospective students to consider HKU's Actuarial Science program. It will arm you with exceptional quantitative and analytical abilities, not only preparing you for a career as an actuary but also unlocking doors to a wide array of quantitative and finance-related roles, as well as advanced postgraduate studies."
