Aims & Features

Aims & Features

The world is rife with uncertainty. Decisions are often made in spite of incomplete data, imperfect knowledge and random variation. Statistics is the study of such variability and uncertainty by developing and applying analytic and quantitative tools which involve logical thinking, problem formulation, probability reasoning and intensive data analyses. Statistics appears in almost all areas of science, business, research, and wherever data are obtained for the purpose of finding information in support of decision making. Therefore, Statistics has been described as the science of making conclusions in the presence of uncertainty.

The Bachelor of Statistics (Statistics) (Programme Code: 6779) establishes for students a strong background in statistical concepts, and provides them with a broad and solid training in applied statistical methodologies. It prepares them for proper applications of this generic science in their future career. Indeed such applications of statistics as an analytical tool have been given growing prominence in the modern society and evolved into specialised fields of study such as survey sampling, time series, biostatistics, bioinformatics, econometrics and machine learning, to name but a few.

The programme caters for students with good mathematics background and is designed to meet a steadily rising demand for specialist statisticians in government, business, finance, marketing, hospitals, IT, marketing, environmental protection, scientific research and universities.

Accreditation

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been awarded the status of an Accredited University by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) since December 2023. The RSS accreditation provides reassurance that the teaching, learning and assessment within the accredited programme is of high quality and meets the needs of students and employers.

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Statistics (BStat) degree programme at HKU and application to RSS via the standard route, graduates are qualified to become a Graduate Statistician (GradStat) designated by RSS.

In addition, the RSS has awarded individual HKU courses with the RSS Quality Mark, a recognition that these courses teach good statistical literacy. Students who have passed these courses are deemed to have met the academic requirements of the RSS Data Analyst award.

Internship Programmes

There is no better training than obtaining solid hands-on experience in the real workplace. Our Internship Programme serves precisely this purpose. As an intern, the student will gain insight into the challenging world and daily activities of a statistician while strengthening his/her technical, analytical and communication skills.

The collaboration with the Census and Statistics Department, HKSARG offers selected students a chance to participate in the Professional Attachment Programme, where students will be supervised by professionals to engage in various statistical researches and duties in a governmental setting.

  • Duration: 1 month
  • Period: Summer each year
  • Requirements: Year 2 or above

BStat students are eligible to use the Department’s Internship / Job Online-application System, where related internships and other job openings from prestigious firms, including graduate positions, will be posted.

  • Duration: Summer or temporary

  • Mode: Part-time or full-time

  • Requirements: Year 3 or above
