Graduate Statistician (GradStat) and Quality Mark of Royal Statistical Society (RSS)

 

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been awarded the status of an Accredited University by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) since December 2023. The RSS accreditation provides reassurance that the teaching, learning and assessment within the accredited programme is of high quality and meets the needs of students and employers.

Upon completion of the Master of Data Science (MDASC) programme at HKU and application to RSS via the standard route, graduates are qualified to become a Graduate Statistician (GradStat) designated by RSS (link).

In addition, the RSS has awarded individual HKU courses with the RSS Quality Mark (link), a recognition that these courses teach good statistical literacy. Students who have passed these courses are deemed to have met the academic requirements of the RSS Data Analyst award (link).

 
 

Programme Information

Master of Data Science (MDASC) is a taught master programme jointly offered by Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science (host) and Department of Computer Science.

Its interdisciplinarity promotes the applications of computer technology, operational research, statistical modelling, and simulation to decision-making and problem-solving in all organizations and enterprises within the private and public sectors.

The curriculum of the MDASC programme adopts a well-balanced and comprehensive pedagogy of both statistical and computational concepts and methodologies, underpinning applications that are not limited to business or a single field alone.

Congregation

From 2021-22, two Congregations will be held annually (in July and December respectively) which is to align with international practices and to facilitate the convenience for students.

Graduands who are eligible for graduation will be assigned to the Congregation nearest to the completion date of their studies for conferral of degree. The Graduation Certificate normally could be collected on the day of the Congregation.

  • Expected graduation time for normative study period

    • Full Time (1.5 year) : Summer (July 2026)

    Part Time (2.5 years) : Summer (July 2027)
