All students should undertake at least one 6-credit capstone course approved in the programme/major which requires students to integrate knowledge and skills they have acquired to accomplish some nontrivial tasks in their areas of disciplinary study.
To: Decision Analytics/ Risk Management/ Statistics Major Students (2018-19)
(Those who have already applied in the first semester need NOT to apply again. Please check the attached list for your names if in doubt.)
We are calling for the third round applications. Students are invited to submit applications HERE for the following capstone courses for 2018-19 second semester: (Note: The earliest that a student can take the following capstone courses is their year 3 study.)
1. STAT4799 Statistics project (12 credits) – YEAR LONG
2. STAT3799 Directed studies in statistics (6 credits)
- Format: Individual project/directed studies
- In the registration form, students can submit up to 10 choices of project titles in descending preference. As all applications will undergo selection by supervisors, please do not assume that you will be automatically assigned a place if you submit only 1 choice.
So far only the following projects are available for your choice: project no. 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 13, 15, 17, 23.

3. STAT4710 Capstone experience for statistics undergraduates (6 credits) (This course is mutually exclusive to all other capstone courses in the majors.)
- Format: Group project
- Students do not need to indicate preference for topics/supervisors, as grouping will be done randomly. The project title/topic will be discussed and fixed during the first meeting with supervisors.

- In particular, students are strongly advised to consult the corresponding project supervisor(s) before submitting choices of project titles in the registration form, if applicable.
When applying for the course:
- Students can apply for more than one course. The Department will make the selection for each course in the above order. If a student applies for more than one course, the Department will consider if the student is of enough academic merit for course #1 first, if not, then course #2, and so on.
Except STAT4799 which is a year-long course, the courses are offered in both 1st and 2nd semesters. Students should indicate which semester they prefer to take the course despite no guarantee.
- The deadline for application is Monday, 14 January 2019. Late applications will not be accepted.
After applying for the course:
- Announcement of the application results will be made via HKU email on or before Wednesday, 16 January 2019. Students may also check the results on the Department’s course website here (under ‘Announcements’).
Upon successful application for the course:
- No changes (e.g. semester, choices of supervisors/groups, etc.) will be entertained.
- Please enroll yourself in the corresponding course for the right semester on SIS during the course selection period. If you do not enroll by the course selection period, it is assumed that you withdraw your application.
- Students will not be allowed to drop the course after the corresponding add/drop period. In particular, students will not be allowed to drop STAT4799 after the add/drop period in September.
